In 1977 NCR were developing the first of what was to become a long and highly successful line of ATM machines; they were the forerunners of the machines now seen in every bank and on every street corner.
The challenge NCR engineers faced was finding a bearing that required no maintenance, could be securely mounted in the side frames of the cash cassettes and could accommodate mounting hole misalignment. This punishing application demanded 24hour operation every single day of the year. Spyraflo, who had launched their line of Self-Clinch, Self-Align, Oil Filled Bronze Bearings in the late 60's, submitted the FSB-375 bearing to NCR for in-depth testing. The bearings performed flawlessly in extreme heat, cold, wet and dry conditions. To meet the rigours of an ATM, Spyraflo modified its 0.375" diameter bearing to give NCR heavy environmental protection. This Spyraflo bearing quickly became the standard choice in the ever-growing line of ATM's for NCR.
Later NCR added more Spyraflo bearings to its stable including the FSSD-250 Self-Clinch, Self-Align, Delryn® bearing which is used in its card reader module.
The bearings have withstood NCR's tests of time and throughout numerous developments and upgrades they have remained the first choice for this demanding application. NCR ATM customers increased performance demands exponentially going from 1,500,000 transactions in 5 years in 1982, up to 5,000,000 transactions over 3 years today.
Thirty years later the simple but unique Spyraflo bearings remain an integral part of NCR ATM's.
Happy 30th anniversary NCR!
